Rev. Jackson to join Illinois Nurses Association and SEIU’s protest against unfair labor practices and better PPE
Chicago, IL. Rainbow –Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. will join the Illinois Nurses Association and SEIU members 10 a.m. today, Monday, September 14, 2020, outside of the University of Illinois Hospital at Chicago, 1740 W. Taylor St., who are protesting unfair labor practices and demands for better protective equipment and a smaller patient-to-nurse ratio.
Last Saturday, more than 800 nurses walked off the job after contract negotiations between the hospital and the Illinois Nurses Association stalemated. The nurses have launched a seven-day strike to demand better job conditions.
“These nurses deserve our support,” said Rev. Jackson. “They need a smaller patient-to-nurse ratio. That is critically important to the care of patients.”
Illinois Nurses Association president Doris Carroll accused the hospital of refusing to “engage in a substantive discussion about achieving safe staffing by setting a limit on the number of patients that can be assigned to each nurse.”
However, hospital CEO Michael Zenn issued a statement saying the hospital does not support staffing ratios better known as “safe patient limits.” Zenn said he has provided the nurses with enough personal protective equipment.
