Rev. Jackson, Rainbow PUSH Coalition call for restoration of hours, services, resources and respect for postal workers

Chicago, IL—The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition strongly support the American Postal Workers Union 0001, National Association of Letter carriers branch 11 and National Postal Mail Handlers Union local 306 and the Chicago Federation of Labor call to approve the $25 billion funding, restore hours, service and resources ordered cut by the new U.S. Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy.

Rev. Jackson and his coalition have embraced the calls for justice from the American Postal Workers Union 0001, National Association of Letter carriers branch 11 and National Postal Mail Handlers Union local 306 and the Chicago Federation of Labors to restore and provide the following demands needed by more than 30 million Illinois essential postal workers to do their jobs effectively:

  • Restore $25 billion funding immediately
  • Provide employees with Personal Protective
  • Equipment (PPE)
  • Provide safety and security
  • Reconnect all sorters ordered dismantled by DeJoy
  • Rescind U.S. Postmaster’s orders to “leave mail   behind at distribution centers rather than taking late trips, extra trips, or logging overtime.”
  • Restore all letter collection street boxes
  • Restore U.S. Postal service operating hours
  • Restore overtime

“Since its inception, the U.S. postal worker’s motto has been “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stops these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

“But, today’s postal workers are caught in the crossfires of COVID-19 and the retribution politics of the Trump administration,” said Rev. Jackson. “We stand with the postal workers and urge them to fight back.”

“We are demanding an end of the injection of partisan politics in the operating of the U.S. Post offices,” said Rev. Jackson. “Our essential postal employees have been forced to cover two and three shifts during this pandemic some of whom have been infected by the virus, others have died. We are calling for the restoration of respect for these postal workers for they have been used as pawns of unprecedented political abuse.”
