Thumb in the Dike Deal Reopens Government – Now Keep it Open
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
Good news: 35 days of gridlock and work without pay are over. The government will be reopened – at least for the next three weeks.
It’s a temporary agreement, a thumb in the dike deal that will put federal employees back to work until Feb. 15. Legislation will go to Congress immediately and if passed and signed by the president all employees will receive their back pay as soon as possible. This is good news for all Americans; especially the 800,000 federal workers who suffered so much want and worry for nothing.
Unfortunately, there will be no relief for several million independent federal contractors. They are some of the biggest losers. They will not be paid for the work they missed during the shutdown.
Now it is time for Congress and President Trump to be mature and do their jobs by completing negotiations to keep the government open and to modernize a comprehensive, humane and 21st century security plan for our southern border.
