Save the Children, Stop the Disgrace at the Border
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
What’s happening on the border is an international disgrace and moral outrage.
We can’t sit idly by and watch this man-made disaster hurt & haunt so many innocent, young lives. Churches and labor, human rights organizations and people of conscience from every walk of life must mobilize and challenge what’s going on at the border.
The Rainbow PUSH Coalition sent a delegation of ministers to Texas last night. They are on the ground now.
We talked with Texas Congresswomen Veronica Escobar and Sheila Jackson Lee. We talked with the mayor of El Paso. They have our full support in this fight for justice.
We want to collect at least 5,000 diapers and undergarments, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and other hygiene products, essentials for “a safe and sanitary” environment.
We want the children out of the detention centers in a timely manner. These places aren’t suitable for adults for an extended period, let alone children as young as a full months old.
Our government can’t separate what’s happening at the border with what’s happening in the country’s where these children of God are fleeing. They are fleeing grinding poverty and political and gang violence.
Jesus was in the same situation. He was born under a death warrant. Mary and Joseph took him to Egypt as a refugee.
Jesus was a border baby.
The United States doesn’t have a border crisis. It has a leadership crisis in the White House, a failure of vision, a betrayal of what America is supposed to stand for.
As he did in the aftermath of the devastation of Hurricane Maria across Puerto Rico, President Trump and his administration seem completely unable, or more likely, unwilling to ease the suffering, especially the suffering of people of color.
We say no to ICE raids, no to breaking up families, no to separating children from their parents, no to locking up children in unsanitary conditions, no to Muslim bans, no to mass deportations.
We stand proudly with Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot for her refusal to allow the city to cooperate with ICE. She is not the only light in this darkness. Mayors across the country have taken the same position.
President Trump, the master of fake news, has used immigrants and asylum seekers to divide people since his infamous escalator ride and declaration that Mexicans are criminals and rapists.
We applaud the House for voting last night - almost strictly along party lines - to send $4.5 billion in humanitarian aid to the border. But the package, according to The New York Times, faces a tough path to enactment.
In the meantime, we the people must fill the breach. Save the children, stop the disgrace at the border.
(Diapers, hygiene supplies and other donations can be sent to Annunciation House, 1003 E. San Antonio Ave., El Paso, Texas, 79901.)
