SANCTUARY CITIES GAIN MAJOR VICTORY IN CHICAGO
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
A federal judge in Chicago today declared that the Trump administration had exceeded its legal authority when it threatened to withhold federal monies from Chicago’s criminal justice system because the city was unwilling to assist federal immigration officials in deporting undocumented immigrants. The ruling also applies to all sanctuary cities nation-wide.
That’s great news.
The Trump administration’s policy was an attempt to punish sanctuary cities. Chicago argued that the policy was a threat to the safety of the city because it would divert money and manpower from fighting local real crime affecting public safety to the federal government’s role of hunting down undocumented immigrants who were mostly no real threat to public safety.
During the presidential campaign of 2016 candidate Donald Trump said that in a Trump administration there would be so much winning that you would get tired of it. However, as President Trump, after a string of court defeats and the lack of any major legislative victories, he and his Attorney General, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, should be getting tired of losing.
