A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr

Today the Rainbow PUSH Coalition is supporting National Voter Registration Day.  According to a recent series on MSNBC called American Swamp the U.S. ranks 122 among the nations in terms of voter turnout.  The lack of full voter registration in the so-called world center of democracy is a sad commentary on our democracy and one contributing factor to this miserable and disturbing fact.

If you have not registered, do so today!  In most states you can register on a daily basis or you can register on-line.  And with one party committed to minimizing and suppressing the vote it would also be a good time for those who are registered to check their registration to make sure they are still registered.

There is hope in the air.  In recent mid-term elections, non-presidential election years, turnout was between 70-and-80 million voters.   In 2018, the number rose to around 113 million – a 30 percent increase.  If that holds true in 2020 there could around 180 million voters that vote and that would be a good thing.

However, that does not mean we should be totally proud.  There are around 220 million Americans who are eligible by age and citizenship to vote.  So there would still be around 40 million Americans who will not vote.  The goal of the RPC is shoot for 100 percent full voter registration and a maximum turnout on Election Day.  Our democracy is based on “we the people,” and we the people should determine to register to vote and vote to the max on Election Day.  It is the only way the government can represent all of us.
