Rev. Jesse Jackson Comments on Mayor Daley's Decision to Appoint Ron Huberman CEO of Chicago Public

January 27, 2009

The following is a statement from Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, regarding Mayor Richard Daley's decision to name CTA chief Ron Huberman as CEO of Chicago Public Schools.

"The Chicago public school system is one of the largest and most challenged school systems in the country. It deserves a leader whose credentials and experience are equal to the task. There should be a transparent search, either within the state or nationally, for the best we have to offer.

Mr. Huberman's credentials and resume do not correspond to the credentials of a top flight school superintendent. Those who direct health care systems have health backgrounds. Those who direct justice departments have criminal justice backgrounds. Those who direct our school system should have an education and systems management background.

The idea behind Local School Councils (LSC) was to create a bottom up and inclusive management process. This appointment of Huberman is a top down and unilateral choice. Chicago's children deserve better. We hope the city council rejects this appointment and rejects this process."
