Rainbow PUSH Coalition Press Conference Today to Announce Launch of Humanitarian Aid for Border Children in Crisis

CHICAGO – While Congress continues to bicker over the details of a $4.5 billion emergency aid package for the U.S.-Mexico border where thousands of immigrant children are held in detention camps, often in filthy, overcrowded conditions, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition will hold a 1 p.m. press conference Wednesday to announce the launch of a national humanitarian aid campaign.

The press conference will be held at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters, 930 E. 50th St., Chicago.

Rev. Jackson is outraged over reports that unaccompanied children held in U.S. custody are being forced to care for other youth as young as three months old, many wearing filthy clothes, dirty diapers and have insufficient food.

“This inhumane treatment of these children is unacceptable and their crisis state flies in the face of what this nation has stood for…’Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’

“The abuse of these children who, like their parents, yearn to be free, is not only unbiblical, it is cruel and heartless,” said Rev. Jackson. “To have our children languishing in overcrowded detention centers separated from their parents is a cruel and un-American. You can’t stop the flow of immigrants by punishing their children. That is immoral.”
