AS A PRACTICAL MATTER GOV. NORTHAM MUST RESIGN
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has confirmed a racist picture is he in a 1984 yearbook. He has acknowledged his actions were wrong and racist and apologized. He said his actions then do not reflect his attitude, views or policies now or at any time throughout his military, medical or public career.
I believe a person can be redeemed from a hideous past. Grace and redemption must remain operative. His overall record as governor has been very positive. He acted heroically during the racist protests in Charlottesville that killed Heather Heyer, he has advocated for taking down the Confederate statues around Virginia and he has advanced voting rights in Virginia.
However, because of the depth of the offense, as a practical matter and under the avalanche of criticism, it will be virtually impossible for Governor Northam to govern. Therefore, it would be wise for him to resign.
