Let's Not Create Fresh Wounds That Are Not Easily Healed
A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
In seven days, Chicago will make history by electing our first African American female mayor. Chicago will be the largest city in the country led by a black woman.
We must not tarnish or diminish this historic moment, this season of hope and change. We must not allow the campaign to degenerate into personal attacks and counter attacks. We need to focus on the vacant lots, abandoned children, police reform, closed mental health clinics, shuttered schools, wages beneath the cost of living.
The people of Chicago – red, yellow, brown, black and white – are blessed to have two brilliant and accomplished candidates, Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle. In the final days of the campaign, the candidates should focus on healing the city April 3 as we move towards the Holy Week, the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, Passover and Good Friday.
The candidates and their surrogates must maintain civility and dignity in these days leading up to the election. This is not about who has the greatest capacity for fratricide. We are trying to model behavior for our children to emulate when they are engaged in conflict.
Let's not hit below the belt. This is a political campaign, not a street fight.
Let's not create fresh wounds that are not easily healed
