JACKSON, RAINBOW PUSH TO HONOR WVON’s CLIFF KELLEY
CHICAGO: The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition are hosting a 10 a.m. “Cliff Kelley Day” celebration Saturday, March 16, at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition headquarters, 930 E. 50thSt., to show appreciation for Cliff’s 35 years of broadcast service as the voice of the black community.
The highly credentialed 77-year-old Kelley is stepping down as WVON’s most popular afternoon drive-time talk show host after being at the station for 25 years. Kelley hosted the morning show for 13 years before broadcasting a live afternoon show.
Kelley, a former Chicago alderman for 16 years, graduated from the Englewood High School and Roosevelt University. He received his law degree from the John Marshall Law School. Cliff is a much sought after TV and radio commentator and analyst.
“It’s hard to imagine WVON without Cliff Kelley, the “Governor of Talk Radio” as we refer to Cliff, said Rev. Jackson. “His knowledge spans from local to international as does his reputation. If we need to get our message out in a timely manner, all we have to do is to talk to Cliff. We will miss his voice and his political influence.”
According to Melody Spann-Cooper, president/CEO of WVON, Kelley will remain as the station’s “Community Ambassador” and will serve as a regular fill-in host.
Kelley is the longest serving talk show host at WVON since the station switched to an all-talk format in 1986. Cliff will maintain his Saturday independently produced show about veterans, “American Heroes,” show that airs at 4 p.m.
