The International Community Must End the Abomination of Slavery

A coalition of conscience, including Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., Rev. Al Sharpton and members of Chicago’s African community, will hold a news conference to demand the United Nations immediately end the abomination of slavery in Libya and prosecute those responsible for resurrecting the evil practice

The coalition will also call on the United States and the international community to develop a plan to help rebuild and stabilize Libya, “so this kind of atrocity will never happen again,” Rev. Jackson said.

Libya has been in a state of chaos since the overthrow and murder in 2011 of Muammar Gaddafi. The U.S. and its NATO allies supplied billions and bombs to the revolt that left several militia groups fighting for control of the country. Some of those groups are now auctioning and selling African migrants and refugees into slavery for as little as $400.

“The U.S., France and the West share some burden in the destabilization of Libya over the protests of much of Africa,” Rev. Jackson said. “Therefore we must share in the task of rebuilding.”

Joining Rev. Jackson and Rev. Sharpton will be Dr. Ewa I. Ewa, chairman of the African Political Action Committee and president of the Nigerian American Forum and Olivier Kamanzi, president and CEO of the Africa Global Chamber of Commerce.

“We condemn these despicable and criminal acts of human trafficking and call for an immediate stop of these atrocities to human life,” Kamanzi said, adding, “We, the international community, shall address the root cause of the problem and hold accountable the perpetrators of these violations of human rights.”
