America Showed Her True Colors Sunday

A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

America showed her true colors in Washington, D.C. Sunday when thousands of patriots poured into the streets to say no to racism and anti-Semitism – to say we will not allow our beloved country to be driven backwards by hate, fear and divisive, mean-spirited tweets.

I could not be prouder of my fellow Americans.

The small band of neo-Nazis and white supremacists who showed up to spew their poison in Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House, were drowned out by a multiracial sea of anti-racist demonstrators.

Acid rain falls from the top down. Since the tragedy of Charlottesville and the murder of anti-racist protester Heather Heyer one year ago Sunday, President Trump continues to equate civil rights marchers, carrying signs that plead, “End Racism and Cruelty” with Klan and neo-Nazi marchers, chanting, “Jews will not replace us.”

Trump has said almost nothing to distance himself from the white supremacists who chant his name in praise.

His failure to condemn these racial terrorists is shameful.

But love conquered hate Sunday. True patriots know that the arc of the universe bends towards truth and justice. And the message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., resonates, still.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

We must take our message of love, not hate to the polls on Nov. 6 and do what we did Sunday in Washington – light up the darkness and drive it out.
