“Healing and Rebuilding” Voter Registration Tour Continues Across Virginia

Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.’s “Healing and Rebuilding” non-partisan voter registration tour across Virginia continues today – Tuesday, Sept. 19 – with rallies in Hopewell, Emporia and Norfolk.

Dozens of students answered Rev. Jackson’s call Monday to “come on down” and register to vote during tour stops at Roanoke College, Virginia University of Lynchburg and Randolph College in Lynchburg.

Olivia Camillo, a 19-year-old Roanoke sophomore from Atlanta, said she registered Monday after being moved by Rev. Jackson’s words about the power of the vote to transform the country and, in light of the murderous racism in nearby Charlottesville, the urgent need “to learn to live together or perish apart.”

“I really liked what Rev. Jackson said about how ‘We should look through a door and not a keyhole,’” she said. “A lot of people are really near sighted and don’t see the future.”

Rev. Jackson was accompanied to Roanoke College by State Delegate Sam Rasoul who described their visit as a “black Baptist preacher and a Muslim legislator walk into a Lutheran college to talk about inclusion.”

Rev. Jackson, founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, also spoke at High Street Church in Roanoke and Diamond Baptist Church in Lynchburg where he urged the congregation to go “door by door, frat by frat, corner by corner to register our neighbors to vote” in Virginia’s Nov. 7gubernatorial election widely seen as a bellwether of the crucial 2018 midterm elections.
