In preparation for the March, you have asked your participants to park in or around 1st United Methodist Church at 419 South Park Avenue. Additional parking is available at Allen Chapel AME Church at 1203 Olive Avenue and you are offering van transportation from the Church to Centennial Park for event staging. It is important to note that street closures surrounding the chosen venue for the Commission meeting will occur based on extensive pedestrian traffic in the general vicinity coupled with the anticipated media vehicles. Any participants planning to drive to the Commission meeting may find it very difficult to find parking. We appreciate your encouragement of using the designated parking spaces as outlined here.
We have agreed to use Centennial Park at 400 Park Avenue as staging area for your participants as early as 2 PM. At approximately 3:30 PM, Sanford Police Officers will direct you to ask your participants to assemble in the street in preparation for your March.
At 4 PM, the March will begin with two (2) patrol cars well ahead of the March and two (2) patrol cars at the rear of the March with bicycle patrols monitoring the sides of the March creating a ‘rolling’ street closure and protecting your participants as they proceed toward the City Commission Meeting. You have agreed to provide van transportation for anyone who wishes to be transported to the Rally site versus participating in or falling out of the March.
We anticipate the Rally beginning between 4:30 – 4:45 PM, with a few short announcements and a prayer. The City will provide a podium with microphone, sound system and 150 chairs. The City Commission meeting is expected to begin at 5 PM. The Police Department will provide a Jumbotron outside with a podcast of the City Commission meeting for anyone who cannot enter the commission meeting based on capacity limitations of the venue.
Following the Commission meeting, the family and their legal representatives as well as leadership from the Empowerment Movement, Inc. will make a few statements. You expect participants from the Rally to disperse within an hour following the City Commission Meeting’s conclusion. Following the Rally, your vans can transport your participants back to Centennial Park or Allen Chapel AME Church.
