Rev. Jesse L. Jackson on US Supreme Court Health Care Decision: “The Right Thing to Do”

The Supreme Court’s historic 5-4 decision is a huge victory for life. Many seniors whose backs are against the wall, students with degrees and no jobs, working poor people, many of whom are sick with preexisting conditions, from Appalachia to Los Angeles, from New York to Mississippi, can breathe a little easier today; their lives will be spared by this gigantic act of social justice and healing. From this law all will benefit and none will lose. This is America at its best.

I congratulate President Obama and Congress for not backing down from the goal of comprehensive health care insurance reform that insures the uninsured and makes health care affordable.

Upholding this health care legislation in the face of virulent Republican opposition is the morally right thing to do. It makes health care more affordable and accessible — and more cost effective. It provides a health care safety net to protect Americans from falling into the abyss. It begins to close the gaps for the uninsured and under-insured, and moves us a step closer to Dr. King’s dream for a health system where everybody will be in and nobody is locked out.

We must continue to fight for progressive change. We must continue to move forward by hope not backward by fear.”
