CHICAGO (April 6, 2011)---The citizens of Milwaukee sent a loud and clear message by electing Chris Abele as their Milwaukee County Executive, the position previously held by Gov. Scott Walker. I would like to congratulate Abele for running a successful campaign that focused on strengthening communities and advocating for working families.
The impact of Walker’s ‘states rights’ agenda is devastating to teachers, public workers and workers’ rights and makes Wisconsin ground zero for economic justice issues.. But on April 5th Milwaukee citizens redeemed themselves and are charting a new direction for the future.
Milwaukee was recently described as the nation’s most segregated city. Recent census data shows Milwaukee is the most segregated city in the country, followed by Chicago, New York and Detroit. A Chicago Tribune article stated 90% of the city’s black population lives on the north side of town.
Segregated cities lead to segregated results. It’s no mystery why there is such a divide in the city’s economic and political structures, unemployment, health care, education, and affordable housing.
Change is needed in Milwaukee County, and Chris Abele has the vision and courage to lead Milwaukee forward to address these critical needs.
