The Illinois House of Representatives voted to expel one of its own members on Friday, the first time such action had been taken in more than 100 years. There were 100 yes votes, six no and three lawmakers voted "present."
Derrick Smith, a Chicago Democrat, was arrested earlier this year for allegedly taking a $7,000 bribe. Federal prosecutors say he agreed to write a letter of support for a daycare owner's grant application in exchange for the money. Prosecutors also say they secretly recorded the then-state representative saying he wanted the $7,000 in cash, because, he said, "I don't want no trace of it."
