Chicago, IL: Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., President/founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Dr. Leon McDougle President of the National Medical Society and their respective members representing 45,000 physicians nationwide, Attorney CK Hoffler, president-elect of the National Bar Association are holding a national teleconference call 2 p.m. (CST) today, Wednesday, May 6th, to challenge the move by several states and the White House to lift the “stay- at- home” orders and send Americans back to work.
THE CALL IN NUMBER IS: 312.967.0888 (NO CODE REQUIRED)
“This move is premature and immoral,” said Rev. Jackson. Agreeing was Dr. McDougle who warned: “We are choosing commerce over caring for the lives of our people to open at this moment without testing and tracking the spread of the virus.” Dr. McDougle said this early reopening of the states without testing and tracking the coronavirus “will drastically increase the impact of this virus costing more lives to the most vulnerable.”
The group includes a coalition of African American, Latino and Native American physicians who are concerned about the disproportionate impact of the virus on people of color and the absence of sufficient access to testing, medical care and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for workers.
Dr. S. Todd Yeary, Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief for the Rainbow PUSH stated, “We must have a national plan before a mass opening of businesses is permitted.”
The group discloses the tenants of the Coalition’s Health Manifesto, which outlines the elements of a plan that should be implemented prior to the opening of the states.
