Letter from Rev. Jackson to Prime Minister Netanyahu

August 15, 2019

August 15, 2019

His Excellency Benjamin Netanyahu

Prime Minister of Israel

Your Excellency:

Israel's right to exist with security is widely accepted in the United States. I just visited Krakow, Poland two weeks ago and toured Auschwitz again. The horror of that protracted nightmare must never be forgotten.

Part of the strength of our shared democratic values is the capacity to accept the tailwinds of agreement and the headwinds of disagreement. We must always defend and protect these values. To bar members of the United States Congress from entering Israel sends a chill through the entire U.S. Congress and obligates the entire body to defend the integrity of the institution and its members.

Barring Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar from visiting Israel is a tactical error while undercutting civil democratic dialogue. I therefore appeal to you to reconsider this decision.

Most respectfully,

Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.
